The cost of our high turnover rate should be studied.  How many man-hours have been spent hiring new staff? How much time is spent training new staff?  How much have we paid substitutes for months and months? How have the students suffered from having a different substitute assisting them every day?  How much time have administrators spent scheduling substitutes every day? How much time have teachers spent instructing the substitutes every day?

It seems like common sense to try to retain hard working, loyal employees that know their job.  Decent pay and benefits, incentives, a little recognition…all basic human needs that result in lower employee turnover.

Most school districts offer their support staff a longevity increase.  (Maybe they know something that 86 does not).  Most districts offer a retirement bonus and/or incentive, something to look forward to.  Most offer a step increase PLUS cost of living adjustment.  The district may have a reserve of funds to tap, but do you??

Hinsdale Township High School District 86 offers no chance for a retirement bonus, longevity increase, allowance for higher education (not even for you masters degree holders), and  advancement of a “support staff??!!”…is rare.

Most of us love working here, but the District makes it hard to stay.
